I’ve been contacted by lots of lovely Insta friends recently asking about what I do to exercise and what I eat.
In the last 7 years I’ve put on over 20 kilos with my first two pregnancies and lost it (slowly).
Being pregnant with Anthony this year (now 18 weeks old), I put on around 14 kilos and now have just a few to go before I’m back at pre-baby weight.
But slowly, slowly.
My approach to health and wellness, exercise and eating well is all about balance.
I roughly follow the 5 and 2 approach.
Monday to Friday I am mindful about what I eat and fill up on all the good stuff.
(Limit bread / pasta / fat / sugar etc ).
Then on the weekends I enjoy myself a little more.
That’s not to say I’ll eat a whole block of chocolate, but if I feel like ice cream or pizza I’ll have some and really enjoy it!
I start each day with a green smoothie – I’ve been doing this for over a year now and LOVE them.
I get such a huge nutritional head start on the day.
I’ve noticed a huge difference in my energy levels and if I need to drop a kilo or two, I’ll have two green smoothies a day and not much else.
My favourite recipe right now which makes two smoothies is:
1 frozen banana
1/4 of an avocado (this makes it super creamy and delish)
Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk (I use Blue Diamond)
I do Pilates whenever I can – I go to Lifestyle Boom and do a Reformer Class.
In between I’ll walk as much as I can or do a 15 min YouTube or Pilates by Lisa workout at home.
The girls and I also love cranking up the tunes and dancing around the house – so much fun.
With exercise you have to find what works for you.
In my case, Pilates really works for me.
I can’t do much high impact as I have had lower back issues in the past (which Pilates has helped me SO much with!).
I exercise mostly for how it makes me feel.
For managing stress. It helps me slow down and focus on one thing.
It re-energises and centres me.
I always walk out of a class feeling ten times better than when I walked in.
A better mum / wife / friend / person.
As my long time friend Beau (who owns incredible fitness studio One Fitness Health Lifestyle) told me.
‘Exercise is a chance to get out of your head and into your body.’
I believe in mindful eating, I’ve never really believed in diets.
I kick off each day with oats, almond milk with cinnamon and pepitas. I’ll also have a green smoothie.
Then I’ll make something really light for dinner like a Salmon and Veggie Tray bake.
In between I snack on apples, berries (the best fruit you can eat if you are watching your weight), Greek yoghurt, almonds, snow peas and carrots.
If I’m craving chocolate – I’ll have a few squares of Lindt dark mint chocolate. Yum!
I only have one coffee in the morning, with no sugar. I really enjoy it and look forward to it.
During the day I carry a water bottle with me and drink as much as I can.
Dieticians say that we often mistake hunger for thirst – so if I start feeling hungry, I’ll have a few big sips of water.
In the evening I drink sparkling water or soda water with fresh lime.
(I saw a glass of soda water with fresh mint and ice cubes on Insta the other night – yum!)
I’ll also drink herbal tea or Super Elixir after dinner and before bed.
The best thing about water is not only does it fill you up – it’s amazing for your skin.
And it’s absolutely FREE!
- I hardly ever meet anyone for coffee. That usually leads to a muffin or cake or something I just don’t need.
- If I do meet someone in the morning, I’ll meet in the park or for a Green Smoothie.
- I always have some kind of snack in my bag; an apple or muesli bar or almonds
- If I’m starving and need to eat on the go, I’ll pick up a salad or smoothie from The Market Juicery or tuna veggie rolls from Sushi Izu, the in house sushi from Woolworths.
- I avoid the food court at shopping centres – even the healthy options usually aren’t great for you.
- If you don’t have it in the house – you can’t eat it! I deliberately don’t buy food that might tempt me.
- Overindulged? Ate too much cheese on the weekend? Don’t feel bad about it, every day is a fresh chance to make more mindful, healthier choices.
- Consistency is the key – you’re better off doing 20 minutes of exercise every day than overdoing it and not being motivated to exercise again for a week.
- Surround yourself with people who motivate and inspire you to be the best version of yourself.
- Come Friday afternoon – it’s time for a glass of bubbles or wine!
