I was very struck by one of the young men. He was tall, well mannered and polite.
I later learned he had never had a bed.
This stayed with me and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I said to my hubby ‘Surely something has to be done about this’.
Last week, my hubby put a call out on his morning 6PR Breakfast show with Steve Mills to see if anyone could help.
With no hesitation, Bedshed offered a brand new king sized single bed, along with a brand new mattress and manchester.
On top of that, after finding out this young man was a big Western Force fan, tickets were organised for him and ten friends to head along to a game PLUS City Motors called to say they would love to provide transportation to and from the game.
Last night I received photos of the new bed and manchester being given to this very deserving young man, and I was so overwhelmed by how awesome our community is.
A while back I started following a young New York hair stylist called Mark Bustos. In his spare time he gives free haircuts to the homeless. He shares their stories, shows them respect, gives them dignity and in doing so – inspires so many other people around the world to make a difference in whatever way they can.
He calls it ‘Be Awesome to Somebody’.
Recently I was putting my shopping away in the boot of my car, negotiating a runaway trolley and my two tired little girls.
A lady walked up to me with a smile and simply said ‘You look like you need a hand’ and took the trolley for me.
It was such a simple act, but it made my day.
A great reminder that if we can help just one person in some small way, it matters and makes a difference.
Many thanks to all the people who played a part to pull all of this together.
There are lots of people behind the scenes who took a personal interest in this young man, wrote emails and made phone calls to make this happen – including 6PR Breakfast Show Producer Emily White, Paige Wright from 6PR and Di Wilcox who works so tirelessly for all the Cinderella Kids.
She is a modern day Fairy Godmother.
A great big special shout out to Nigel at Bedshed Claremont, The Western Force and City Motors.
You guys are awesome!
There is one very happy young man who is all set with a brand new comfy bed for Winter and a trip to the rugby to look forward to.
