My hubby and I were delighted to be invited to the Jackman Furness Foundation launch at WAAPA (WA Academy of Performing Arts) over the weekend. We often joke that our all singing all dancing Ava is ready to apply to WAAPA at the age of three, and if I had my teens / twenties over again, I would absolutely love to attend (although my talent is limited to interpretive dancing and Disney Princess impersonations). Three years of singing and dancing sounds like brilliant fun to me, although I do remind my hubby that every day in our house is like that anyway – full of singing, dancing and mini concerts.
So it was a cause close to our hearts, and the fact that the invitation came from Hugh Jackman and Deborah Lee-Furness made it even more exciting!
But what to wear to a special day time event?
My original outfit I had planned to wear didn’t quite work (luckily I had tried it on with a few days to spare!) so I called on my gorgeous friend Greer from Share My Closet who gave me a few fabulous options and I decided on this stunning Life With Bird Dash Snow Dress. The colours are just beautiful and the dress is very ‘me’. (It’s available to hire by the way! Along with dozens of other designer dresses at Share My Closet).
When I tried the dress on for my hubby he thought it might be a bit short, which then made me second guess my outfit choice. Boo.
The solution? An Aussie Bombshell spray tan by the amazing Penni! I always feel and look so much healthier and slimmer with a tan and feel so much more confident too. Aussie Bombshell tans are always flawless and so natural, and mine is still going strong one week later! Hooray!
I also popped into Maurice Meade for a super sleek and shiny blow dry the morning of the event, I can’t believe how long my hair is finally growing after all these years! Thanks Maurice Meade for always making me feel like I was blessed by the hair gods.
The dress was a little big for me, so I pulled it in with a belt, teamed it with a nude slip underneath (the dress was a bit low at the front), my trusty nude heels that go with EVERYTHING, a nude clutch, a slick of MAC ‘Toying Around’ lipstick (a beautiful pinky / orange), a spritz of Chanel and we were ready to go!
Guests were treated to performances of ‘Age of Aquarius’ from Hair and ‘Tonight’ from West Side Story by third year WAAPA students before being joined on stage by Hugh Jackman for ‘I Still Call Australia Home’. It was so surreal watching Hugh Jackman perform just metres away. He’d flown in only hours before and sang with no rehearsal. Incredible!
Afterwards guests were invited to a gorgeous garden party which Hugh was attending after completing a few TV interviews. I saw him arrive and he happened to walk past me. I wasn’t going to miss my moment! I stepped forward and shook his hand, but he was whisked away to meet the Premier by a very yappy publicist (‘Hugh, you can’t stand in the sun!’ referring to the recent removal of skin cancer from his nose). Hugh said over his shoulder ‘I have to meet the Premier, it doesn’t mean you’re any less important!’ with a cheeky smile. But he never came back.
Not to worry – there were lots of other fabulous and fun guests to chat to including super stylish Minister of Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop, Designer Aurelio Costarella (the loveliest person you will ever meet), Aurelio Costarella Brand Manager Paul O’Connor and Mel Gilchrist who has four children with hubby Adam Gilchrist. Incredible. Tips please!
It was also really special for my hubby and I to attend an event together. He is usually away working on weekends, and on the very rare occasions we do attend an event together he is often MC, so we had lots of fun getting dressed up and enjoying a few child free hours together.
The whole experience left me on a high, I can’t stop thinking about how amazing WAAPA is and how lucky we are that future students will now have the Jackman Furness Foundation.
Who knows, one of my girls might even be one of those future students.
(And who knows, I might even audition as a mature aged student with my rendition of ‘Time After Time’ Romy and Michelle style. Ha ha!).

Have you almost (or actually!) met a mega star?
Whats your special talent? What would your audition piece be for WAAPA?
