It seems every week I hear a story in the news about someone needing First Aid. Earlier this year, a distraught mother took her lifeless little girl to the front counter of a supermarket, where she was saved by a quick thinking stranger who performed mouth to mouth. That story made headlines around the world.
Just last week I read in the paper about a baby needing CPR at a local Dome cafe here in Perth.
In both of these cases, lives were saved by quick thinking people who knew First Aid. I wondered, how would I have reacted in the same situation? Would I have known what to do? Been calm enough to act without panicking?
Could I save my own childs life in the event of an emergency?
The answer was, I just wasn’t sure.
I’d been thinking of doing a First Aid course for ages, so when I was invited along to a St John child resuscitation course, I jumped at the chance! I headed along with a couple of other lovely mums including Jessica Bratich-Johnson, Elissa Griesser and Trae Flett where we all learnt what to do in those crucial first few minutes after an emergency. Our instructor Brooke was brilliant at transferring her knowledge while making the class fun and opening up lots of discussion about child safety and First Aid. Oh, and a camera crew from Channel 7 was there to film all the First Aid fun!
It took just two hours to learn how to perform CPR, what to do in the event of choking, asthma, anaphylaxis and how to use a defibrillator. I walked away feeling so much more confident that if I was faced with a life or death situation, I would know what to do.
Those two hours could potentially save a life, and that life could be my own child’s.
If you have been thinking about doing a First Aid course, or aren’t sure what you would do if faced with an emergency – then it’s worth checking out the St John First Aid courses here. You could do a child resuscitation awareness for $49 or a child basic resuscitation for $89.
If you make one New Years resolution for 2014 – make it doing a First Aid course. You can sign up with your partner, friends, colleagues, parents or mothers group to make sure that if anything happens to YOU, the people around you will know what to do too!
I have a $50 St John’s voucher up for grabs! All you have to do for your chance to win, is tell me in the comments section below why you want to learn First Aid and whose life YOU could be saving.
