This morning I went shopping in the city for Winter boots and clothes and a few birthday gifts. My hubby thought I was crazy shopping for Winter on a 37 degree day, but I explained that unless you get in early – you miss out.
Sure enough, when I got to the store the three or four items I had on my list were sold out statewide in my size. It’s not even Autumn. Crazy huh?
Not to worry, I still had a few things on my list including some gifts and shoes for Ava.
Do you think I could find anything in the sizes I needed? Not a thing.
To make things worse, there were a few stores (namely department stores) where we weren’t even acknowledged by the sales staff. I went to one make up counter four times, FOUR! and no-one even said ‘We’ll be with you in a minute’.
All I wanted was a lipstick, I knew the exact name and everything.
The final straw? When a salesperson at a pharmacy shoved a birthday card into a shopping bag crumpling the envelope.
It’s just not OK.
There seems to be a wide spread culture of indifferent or even non existent customer service.
On the weekend we took the girls for Sunday lunch to a relatively new restaurant opposite the beach. We waited at the entrance for a few awkward moments before a staff member called out in the near empty venue ‘Sit wherever you like’.
Alrighty then. The only redeeming feature? The ocean view.
Needless to say we won’t be going back.
I often acknowledge excellent customer service on social media and have recently experienced exceptional customer service in two different IGA stores in Perth where I was served by very polite, well mannered and well dressed young men (ha ha, I just realised how old I sound writing that line!), so great customer service is still alive and well but it seems to be the exception rather than the rule.
I just don’t understand why people don’t care?
It will forever bewilder me and for now, I’ll be sticking with my local boutiques, shopping centres and cafes where I can be guaranteed good old fashioned customer service. Failing that, you’ll find me online.
And they wonder why retail is struggling.

I vote we turn this into a positive and celebrate all of the wonderful people who are providing exceptional customer service! Whether it’s a local cafe, online or actual store or service provider, please name and celebrate them and even link them in below!!0
